The well-organized candidates' meeting for the municipal elections in march 2020 ended with a bang at the TSV thundorf sports center. In the election for mayor of the municipality of thundorf, the incumbent mayor egon kloffel and his challenger edwin braun faced off, as they did six years ago. Whereas in 2014 kloffel had the upper hand with 27 votes against braun 13 votes, the tables were now turned and braun prevailed with 22 votes to eleven. As in 2014, there was also a loss of members of the municipal council. Werner wenzel will not be standing for re-election after two terms, heribert kloffel, peter saal and frank pfennig (all for one legislative term).
No separate list for CSU
Since 1978, the candidates in the district of thundorf have been elected on the "CSU – freie wahler" list the party members present were visibly disappointed: egon kloffel announced that the local CSU association would no longer be putting forward its own list. The incumbent mayor has been chairman of the local association since 2013. A visibly disappointed kloffel pointed out that during his time in office he had succeeded in putting the municipality's budget on very solid footing, as never before, and had managed to bring the per capita debt down to around 30 euro. "My work didn't suit everyone, that's just politics", says kloffel. Certainly it honors him that he democratically accepted the defeats and spontaneously agreed to run for the upcoming municipal council anyway.
After the burial of edwin braun, the election committee, chaired by alfred bretscher, took over the further handling of the case. The attendance was rather modest with 34 eligible voters, which meant that only eight candidates were found. It was agreed that the list should be in alphabetical order. Voting was done in block.
The eight candidates are: (1) nadine angenbrandt, (2) edwin braun, (3) dieter buchner, (4) alexander geiling, (5) sigrid hotaling, (6) egon kloffel, (7) frank saal and (8) michael seufert.
Heinz Schuler was elected as commissioner for the list and gerhard heilmann as his deputy.
