Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in protest at US president donald trump’s visit to the uk. Treasurers of the "stop trump" initiative even spoke of "at least 250,000" demonstrators in london alone. There were also demos in other cities such as belfast and windsor.
Several protest marches went through the center of london to the government district between parliament and trafalgar square. Police said this afternoon that the site had reached capacity. Several helicopters circled over the city center.
Unions, human rights activists and religious groups were among those who called for the demonstrations. They accuse trump of sexism, racism and hatred of homosexuals. With slogans like "trump not welcome" or "away with trump," they gave vent to their displeasure with the U.S. President. "He has no respect auber of himself," said an elderly lady who carried a sign that read "toxic" along with a skull and crossbones image of trump’s hairdo in front of her. But despite the anger at trump, the mood was generally upbeat. Some participants paraded through the streets dancing and singing.
Hundreds had gathered in parliament square earlier in the day to watch a six-meter helium balloon in the shape of a baby trump in diapers float above the square. According to the activists, the idea was to make fun of trump and his, in their eyes, childish character.
London mayor sadiq khan had earlier defended the approval of the satirical protest. Critics had found the balloon offensive to trump and called for the action to be stopped. "Frankly, the idea that we’re limiting the right to freedom of speech because a foreign politician could feel slighted is a walk on the edge," khan told BBC radio on friday.
Trump had previously attacked the popular khan in an interview with the "sun" and indirectly blamed him for terrorist attacks and crime in the british capital. "I think he’s done a very bad job on terrorism, a very bad job on crime," trump said.
Already on thursday several hundred people had demonstrated in front of the entrance to the land of blenheim palace, near oxford. There, prime minister theresa may hosted trump at a gala dinner. Dozens of activists also made a loud noise outside the ambassador’s residence in london, where trump spent the night, on thursday evening.
Trump baby to accompany u.S. President to scotland as well, according to activists. The organizers of the protest had made a request to fly the balloon near trump’s golf resort, where trump is spending the weekend.
For saturday, trump supporters in london have also announced a demo. Supporters of the imprisoned right-wing extremist tommy robinson are also expected to attend the event. Police imposed strict conditions for the event. At a similar demonstration in june there were clashes with the security forces.
