Foliage dispute in gundelsheim: expert adviser intervenes

Trees, shrubs and bushes – public green spaces and parks. This is the job of alexandra klemisch, district advisor for garden culture and land conservation at the bamberg district office. Her area of responsibility also includes cemeteries, which means their basic design. On the one hand, it should correspond to the location, but on the other hand, it should fulfill ecological and practical requirements. A balancing act. The expert showed the people of gundelsheim how this can be done with the help of a number of example pictures. Which makes it clear: when it comes to the hereafter, there is already a lot to be done in this world.

The municipality had recently received complaints about the foliage in the cemetery. In addition, the municipal council has been dealing with the topic of cemetery and cemetery design for a long time. Especially since here, too, the latest developments and needs must be taken into account: more and more people are having themselves cremated after death. With what for urn burials appropriate precautions are to be made. At the same time, relatives often live far away, which raises the question of grave maintenance. This also depends on the basic design of the cemetery.

Alexandra klemisch came to gundelsheim for expert advice from the district technical advisor.
She made it clear that "leaves belong to autumn like snow to winter"." If you ask the district advisor for permission to remove a tree for these reasons, it is like asking the police for permission to rob a bank, she made clear.

She had high praise for the new cemetery, which was built about 20 or 25 years ago, and its great concept of grounds and paths. Here everything is very well thought out and sensible. She mentioned the main axis defined by lime trees as well as the hazel bushes as a demarcation between the sections. This provides the necessary intimacy in the cemetery, which is especially important for mourning. They like the free growing hedge between the rows of graves. Because of the wild seedlings, it is very varied, lively and of a certain ecological value. Admittedly, the wildlings gave a somewhat untidy impression for some people. The alternative is to leave everything as it is and only remove the wild growth. Or to leave in a grave row only one shrub variety.

Turf would be desirable
For the old cemetery it would be desirable to replace the chippings with rolled turf, but this would probably meet with resistance. However, an improvement could be achieved by planting trees in the outer area.

There is sufficient space for urns in the new cemetery, individual urn graves already exist here. The urn burial itself, however, did not correspond to the local burial culture. If, then rather an urn field, an urn grove would fit – however with rotting urns. On the subject of maintenance – the community will take care of it. Stones were placed to commemorate the dead, so that the bereaved also have a place for their mourning.

On the other hand, klemisch rejected a pure urn wall from a professional but also an emotional point of view: "in front of such a wall, one feels like in front of a closet." The design of a cemetery has a social and cultural function and is a very sensitive area. She also attested to the people of gundelsheim: "they have a very beautiful cemetery, which they should also maintain in its design."

Included in the resolution
Mayor Jonas merzbacher (SPD) thanked for the informative explanations. The recommendation of alexandra klemisch to dispense with a wall of urns was incorporated in particular into the following decision. For this a urn field is created. As planned for a long time, the heroes' cemetery is to be renovated, a loudspeaker system is to be purchased and the cemetery staircase is to be prepared, among other things.
