How much tourism does the rhon?

Staying overnight with a panoramic view of the starry sky? No one has to make a trip to the north cape for that, it can also be done in the rhon, for example on the wasserkuppe. However, tourism is not only an important economic factor for our hessian neighbors, but also for the district of bad kissingen. But: what is the current situation and when is tourism too much for flora and fauna??

Corona pandemic: new tourism trend in the rhon

Jennifer rother, managing director of rhon gmbh, says: "corona is definitely making itself felt in rhon as well." Accommodation providers and the catering trade had to develop hygiene concepts, among other things. And despite the pandemic: "we are experiencing a strong increase in demand from the local population group. Many rhonians decide not only to vacation in germany, but also to "vacation at home"." The trend is toward vacationing in smaller accommodations.

Demand for information materials such as brochures had also increased. And: the tourists stay longer, that shows the latest figures from the month of june. The length of stay of guests in the rhon has increased by 0.7 days. While tourists stayed an average of 5.1 days in june 2019, this june they stayed 5.8 days.

Bed occupancy in the rhon is slowly increasing

"At the start of the pandemic, a large proportion of rhon’s accommodation establishments were naturally worried." At present, however, the situation has eased, with the result that bed occupancy rates in most establishments have risen again. Alexandra metz from the tourist and home office of the market town of burkardroth confirms this: "at the moment, there are very few guests through corona. But there is a trend: slowly it becomes more." According to rother, the number of overnight stays is still behind that of the previous year. She sees the lockdown as the reason for this. Increasingly on weekends, guests from the surrounding metropolitan areas were exploring the rhon.

Restaurateurs and accommodation providers

The weibe rossl in stralsbach, for example, is benefiting from this. "We notice that the high rhoners are very busy", says thomas hergenroder, whose family runs the country inn in stralsbach. The guests were staying not only for dinner, but also for the night. In the second restaurant of the family in geroda has changed something in the customer base this summer. "We are missing the scandinavians who spent the night here on their way to italy." But for that we have guests from the taunus and the metropolitan areas here." Hergenroder sums up: "according to the circumstances, we are doing well."

Jager appeal: respect the way commandment

But the search for rest and relaxation has also consequences – especially for the wildlife. Because of the harvested fields, the game currently lacks protective cover. "The areas that are still overgrown and offer protection are then naturally hotspots", says dr. Helmut fischer, chairman of the bad kissinger hunters’ association. In addition, the high pressure on leisure time. These are, for example, tourists or walkers with free-roaming dogs who do not obey the rules of the road. "At the moment is the phase in which the game begins to accumulate reserves for the winter." The free time pressure is fatal in this situation for the animals. Fischer therefore appeals: "the people should leave their animals on the leash and respect the few thickets as a wild rest zone."
