The lohhofgraben received four new bridges for cyclists and pedestrians, and on the 1. December the release took place. It was used plastic reinforced with fiberglass. "The over 33 year old wooden bridges were dilapidated and in urgent need of renewal", declared mayor german hacker and markus himmler from the city’s building department.
So plastic instead of wood, and the new bridges should last at least 50 years. As himmler explained, the material has many advantages over wood. Since the processing time of the material is also much shorter, the assembly took just three weeks. However, the construction had another decisive advantage: numerous lines run underground, making the foundation of two bridges very difficult, since the main connection lines of the herzo works to the north switchgear plant run in the area of the foundation.
Thus, a solution had to be found for a very flat foundation. That’s why there was no question of concrete bridges, because there was no room for a sufficient foundation.
Because of the material, the company needed little space, everything could be delivered with smaller vehicles, and no heavy equipment was needed during construction: above all, a lot of time was saved.
With a red anti-slip surface from a special company in the netherlands, the footbridges are supposed to be comparatively safe. The total cost of the four bridges is around 450,000 euros, although the mayor assumes that the sum will not be reached.
In the next few days there are some small remaining works to be done, like the overpasses and the headboards of the gelander, which could not be done because of the weather conditions.
