“Firefighter-run” in ebern: what firefighters achieve

Passers-by in the city center of ebern were confronted with an unusual sight on saturday in the late afternoon. A convoy that is seldom seen: in front the team transporter of the volunteer fire department of ebern, behind it twelve firefighters in full protective gear with donned breathing apparatus, jogging – and with noticeable strain on their faces.

"After the firefighter-run in waldkirch near freiburg, for which we had been training the last months, was finally cancelled because of the corona-pandemic, the de-exchange was of course rough", according to marcel leibold, responsible for service sports at the ebern floriansjungern. The run, which will take place on 10. The five-kilometer race, which took place in the breisgau region of germany on october, would have been the highlight for the running group, which had repeatedly been in "full assembly" in the past weeks on its training circuit between ebern and rentweinsdorf was on the move.

An alternative was needed

After this was cancelled due to local corona restrictions, the ebern group quickly agreed that they still wanted to do the run. Just at home and in a small circle. "Our mannerists have earned the run by their long training. As the person in charge, nothing better can happen when you can fall back on a top-fit team in the event of an alarm", second commander nico sonnefeld said.

The route through the city was therefore deliberately chosen to highlight the efforts involved in firefighting "and to show the people that we are there for our city", first commandant david pfeufer, who ordered the run in the context of the service sport, joins in.

Highest respect for the physical achievement also pays district fire inspector thomas habermann from unterpreppach, who praised his comrades at the finish also in the name of the district fire inspection habberge for their exemplary service attitude and their fitness.

Arrived at the finish line, the effort was written on the faces of all runners. In addition to the normal physical exertion of a fast five-kilometer run, the additional effort required for protective clothing, helmet and respiratory protection equipment adds to the strain. "Jacket and pants, which are designed to withstand temperatures of up to 800 degrees in the event of a fire, do their part, as does the total of 17 kilograms of equipment", says runner simon gerstenkorn. At 34, he is one of the senior members of the dedicated runners "but certainly not one of the slowest in the force", he states with a mischievous smile.
