Of course you can be fascinated by the pure play of colors. Or by the virtuoso processing of the raw glass. Or of the wonderful glass material itself, which sparkles like a collection of cut gemstones. But max wild (1911-2012) is more ambitious: he wanted to create art specifically for an educational institution whose mission is to challenge young people. He won over the jury with this idea during the call for tenders in the run-up to the construction of the new CVG in 1968, so that city architect fritz kerling specially planned four light wells for the glass windows in the east wing.
Bringing light into education, illuminating the mind and helping young people to gain knowledge is a core concern of pedagogy. And max wild is an art teacher at the graf-munster-gymnasium in bayreuth from 1955 to 1967. In his glass mosaics, it is always bright bricks that are set around the glowing color palette in the middle. The conclusion is clear: this is about the diversity of talents or the colorful and lively subjects of instruction.
Max wild revives the glass architecture of medieval cathedrals, but uses the modern material concrete instead of lead. His son gunter remembers his father's very own production technique: he first smashed the thick raw glass from the glassworks in immenreuth (upper palatinate) with a hammer, then fitted the broken pieces into a steel wire mesh in the intended coarseness, finally filling the joints with concrete.
Their different widths are intended by the artist. It enhances the vividness of the window, matching the reflective fractures and the uneven glass blocks with their bubbles, streaks and grains. The light coming from the atrium makes the colors dance. School should be enlightening, but also lively, colorful and fun – max wild keeps it in front of our eyes.
