Berlin (dpa) – the berlin comic artist lona rietschel, creator of the popular characters abrafaxe, is dead. She died on tuesday at the age of 84 years, as the mosaic publishing house announced.
Rietschel, who was born in what is now poland, originally wanted to be a fashion designer, but later switched to cartooning. In 1960, she began working as a comic artist for the gdr mosaic publishing house, whose comic books had a circulation of millions.
From the middle of the 1970s, rietschel gave the abraxes "abrax, brabax and califax" a shape and a friendly character. 2016 the three imps with the bulbous noses celebrated their 40th anniversary. Birthday. The three of them had many adventures together at different times.
Abrax portrayed rietschel as a rascal, who did not always think of the consequences. Barabax, thanks to her drawing skills, was a clever creature who always helped the colorful troupe out of a jam. And the cozy califax, who also liked to be lazy, had a good characteristic thanks to her talent: he cooked for his friends with passion.
According to the publisher, rietschel finished working on the books in 2000. Over the years, however, she drew covers for collector’s editions again and again. The popular mosaic comics are published monthly to this day. In GDR times, they were hard to come by.
