man confesses to murder of ex-girlfriend's partner

A 43-year-old man confessed to killing his ex-partner's boyfriend in augsburg district court. "Yes, it's true", he said at the start of the trial on thursday. "I was no longer in control." The charge is murder. According to the prosecution, the 43-year-old lay in wait for the couple in august 2011 in augsburg and stabbed the 38-year-old several times with a cake knife, killing him. The attacked one was first badly injured and bleeding heavily and fled to a yard near the woman's apartment. According to the indictment, the attacker caught up with the victim and cut the new boyfriend's throat, and the man bled to death.

The couple had just returned from a bicycle tour. The breakdown service driver is said to have been unable to cope with the separation from his ex-girlfriend and to have tried again and again to win her back – without success. "I loved her so much", said the defendant, who read out a written statement. "I did not want to lose her." In front of the chamber he asked for forgiveness. "I'm sorry for the rest of my life."

Separation after one and a half years

He met his ex-girlfriend in early 2009, according to the prosecutor's office. One and a half years later, the wife had separated from him. According to the indictment, the 43-year-old kept contacting her, even though she had made it clear to him that she no longer wanted to be together with him. Shortly after that they started a new relationship.

Because he did not want to leave his former partner, there was finally even a judicial contact ban against the 43-year-old. Nevertheless, he drove to his ex-girlfriend's apartment on the day of the crime to see her, the defendant said. "She was like a drug for me." When he saw her with her new boyfriend, anger rose in him.

When asked why he had a knife with him, the alleged perpetrator replied: "I think I just wanted to arm myself." He was afraid of the ex-girlfriend's boyfriend, but did not intend to stab him. He could no longer remember the act itself – only that he had twitched a knife. "I was like in a trance."
