350 years of the paris opera: scandals, records, worries

Verdi’s "simon boccanegra" directed by catalan scandal director calixto bieito, mozart’s "don giovanni" in a new production by belgian ivo van hove, a ballet world premiere created in collaboration with japanese strong artist hiroshi sugimoto.

It is an ambitious and modern program with which the paris opera national is celebrating a double anniversary this year: its 350th birthday. Birthday as well as the 30. Anniversary of opera bastille, which since 1989 has been its second theater alongside garnier.

The paris opera was founded as the "national academy of music and dance" in june 1669 by king ludwig XIV. Launched. It evolved from the predecessor institution of the "academie royale de la danse" with its now world-famous ballet de l?Opera de paris. The "sonnenkonig" had already called this into being in 1661, because he liked to dance and tipple for a living. He is often said to have even missed the main roles in his performances at the yard. Eight years later, the lover of the arts expanded it to include the academy of music, which became today’s opera national de paris.

In its long history, the institution moved several times before it found its home in the palais garnier. The playhouse, designed by the french architect charles garnier (1825-1898), was inaugurated on 5. January 1875 opened. For decades, the magnificent neo-baroque building was the central opera house. It was not until 1989 that opera bastille challenged him for this rank. The new building was completed on 13. July 1989, the eve of the 200. Inaugurated on the 50th anniversary of the storming of the bastille – still unfinished. The first opera performance did not take place until 17. March 1990 with "les troyens" (the trojans) by hector berlioz took place.

In 350 years, the state opera can look back on stylish premieres, but also some scandals. To the rough done pay "the hugenots" by giacomo meyerbeer and "faust" by charles gounod. The "tannhauser" by richard wagner, which failed in 1861, was probably one of the most serious opera scandals in paris to date.

Since 2014, the two opera houses in paris have been headed by artistic director stephane lissner, who was previously director of the aix-en-provence festival and artistic director of the world-famous teatro alla scala opera house in milan. Under the 66-year-old frenchman, both houses have achieved historical records. At 74.4 million euros, the facilities brought in more than ever before through ticket sales in 2017. 400 performances per year are on the books. According to lissner, the occupancy rate of the palais garnier with 1900 seats and the opera bastille with 2700 seats is 93 percent.

The new building on the place de la bastille, which was opened in 1989, was initially ill-fated. Mismanagement, acoustic problems and controversy made headlines. Just two years after the opening, the first limestone slabs fell from the facade. Originally, a modular hall was to be built inside for smaller and less costly productions. But only the concrete form was created at that time. Lissner now wants to have the hall completed.

The frenchman will not live to see the opening of the opera house, which is scheduled for 2023 at the latest. His contract expires in august 2021 for reasons of age. According to french law, one must not be older than 67 to hold this position.

For months, paris has been looking for a new director – so far in vain. Many of the rough names are already under contract or otherwise in negotiations. For a while there was speculation about the appointment of the frenchman dominique meyer. But the current director of the vienna state opera is to become the next director of milan scala.

Generally, directors are appointed two to three years in advance so that they have enough time to prepare for their inaugural season. The parisian music world is therefore worried about whether the opera national de paris will have a program for 2021/22. Some even fear that – if the wait continues – their doors will be temporarily closed.
